Scenic Stuff!

There's nothing exceptional about the scenic side of the layout and I have not used anything different to that used by many other layout builders before. What I have done is to try and capture the essence of the 'full size', shrink it and try to make it look right in our small scale world.

Observing real life is essential to this and using natural materials (where appropriate) can help with the picture we are trying to create.

It all takes time and is also as important as the locomotives or carriages that we buy or make, to run through this landscape.

Possibly more important, as it can transform the train set into a miniature railway, with care in execution.

The scenic parts, I would beak down as -

  • The foundations - hills, waterways, roads etc. (Groundworks)
  • Ground Cover - whether that is the grass, paving or roads
  • The green stuff - all those trees and bushes
  • Ballasting the track - needs to look the part as much as the green stuff!

The four sections here, will cover the various techniques I have used for creating the landscape around Meifford, from the baseboards upwards!

The buildings that form part of the landscape are all covered in another section. Here, it's just the (pretend) nature and nothing else.

I hope you find it all of some use.
