Buildings Around Meifford

It's surprising, that even for a relatively compact layout there are quite a number of buildings, both railway and non-railway use!

All of the buildings around Meifford are scratch-built, using a variety of techniques, some new to me and others I have used before.

There are three distinct areas within Meifford -

  • Meifford Town itself including the station area
  • The canal and the canalside industry
  • Meifford Hill

Being a freelance location actually doesn't make things any easier, since I had to come up with the right style for the area and the era I am modelling, plus a 'company theme' for the railway associated buildings.

Meifford is essentially complete as I write this (2023), with all of the buildings in place, although I have recently been considering 'updating' or replacing one or two of the earlier ones with something more appropriate. As they say, layouts evolve!

Buildings take time to make!

As stated, all of the buildings are scratch built and that includes things like windows, roof tiles, corrugated iron and so on. I like the challenge, plus it also means that windows and things are made to fit the buildings and not the other way!

It takes longer this way, but not by much actually.

I also like using natural materials if possible, so where things should be wood, then I like to use real wood. If it's slate, then I try and use slate. There are limitations of course, due to the limitations of scale, but the main principal is that it needs to look right.

The pages in this section cover the buildings and some of the techniques I have used to make them. For some I have also included a gallery showing the stages of construction which I hope will be of interest.
